In this month's Franchisor Q&A, Tutor Doctor's Franchise Development Director Nigel Mayne discusses the USP of the Tutor Doctor brand, how the business meets the ever-changing demands of the education sector and what Tutor Doctor franchisees benefit most from.
When did the Tutor Doctors business begin?
Tutor Doctor was founded in 2000, under the principle that everyone can learn but not in the same way.
Learning centres were not providing what students needed since a classroom environment is what they were struggling with in the first place. Tailored one-to-one education is what they needed to succeed.
We started franchising in 2003 and after rapid expansion in Canada, we opened our first franchise in the USA in 2007 followed by our first UK franchise in 2008. We currently have 147 franchised territories in the UK and 640 in 15 countries.
What makes Tutor Doctor different from other private tutoring businesses?
Our core philosophy is: “everyone can learn.” We provide a customised academic game plan for every child and embed six core competencies to help each student become a better learner.
We begin by having a free of charge consultation with each family. We take the time to understand the educational journey of the student, identify their educational needs and their learning styles to help them succeed.
Our franchisees and their tutors are committed to making a difference – our mission is to: "change the trajectory of students’ lives.”
The education space has changed significantly in recent years. What changes have you noticed and how have you tailored your business to meet these changes?
Over time, greater pressure has been put on both students and families. Entry level career positions now require more and more qualifications. Tutor Doctor’s customised approach helps students to realise their true potential.
While our focus to date has been one-to-one tutoring in the convenience of the family home, Tutor Doctor has now introduced an industry-leading online platform giving franchisees and students greater access and flexibility when working with tutors.
Private tutoring services are forecast to reach ÂŁ197.4 billion by 2024, and online tutoring is forecast to reach ÂŁ86.6 billion by 2021.
What kind of support can a Tutor Doctor franchisee expect?
Tutor Doctor’s support for every new franchisee begins with our training and launch support programmes.
Training has multiple phases. We begin with an 80-hour online foundations training. This is followed by a 3-6-week programme that covers all the necessary business pre-launch preparedness activities. A final week of in-class certification training occurs at the companies training facility in Toronto, Canada.
The Tutor Doctor Franchise Launch Support Program (LSP) is designed to provide intensive remote and in-field support to facilitate immediate growth of a new franchised business over its first year of operation. Every new franchisee is assigned their very own Launch Support Specialist (LSS) who works with them throughout their entire first year. After this, franchisees have access to a team of specialised coaches covering areas of expertise such as marketing, technology and growth strategies.
How do you help franchisees to achieve a work-life balance?
Our franchisees run their business from home and have complete control of their diary. Our UK call centre can only book appointments at times that the franchisee has stipulated.
Furthermore, franchisees have the option to operate our executive model, allowing them to scale their business by working in the business rather than on the business.
What's in store for Tutor Doctor in 2019?
While Greater London has led the way with outstanding results, our 2019 focus is to grow with the right franchisee partners in other areas such as Birmingham and Midlands, the North West, North East, East Anglia, South, South West, Wales and Scotland.
