When you’re deciding whether or not to become a franchisee, you want to know the numbers involved. TREND Transformations offers various business models with varying levels of growth. The success of your business will be down to you, but you can, potentially, generate revenues of between £400,000 to £600,000 in year 1. By year 3 it is not uncommon to hit the magic £1m annual turnover!

In our latest Franchisor Q&A, Danny Hanlon, COO of TREND Transformations, explains why home improvement franchises are booming, and also discusses TREND's exciting business plans for the next few years.

Q1. Why is your business a smart franchise investment for entrepreneurs?

The home improvement sector is booming, with the last few years in particular breaking all records. We can offer our partners a unique range of products that will allow them to tap into multiple revenue streams, giving their customers a high-quality service that few others can match.

We are also fully vertically integrated, with our own proprietary products – such as etherium® by E-Stone, and Foreverseal® - meaning that both our franchisees, and their customers, can always be sure of the highest possible standards throughout the renovation process. With more than 25 years of proven franchising success behind us, we are a global brand like no other – one that knows how to help our partners become part of our success story.

Q2. What do you look for in a potential franchisee?

There are a number of traits that make up a great franchisee, but most of all we are looking for people like us – ambitious, business minded individuals who care about delivering a fantastic service.

More specifically, we like to see the following:

  • Willing to follow a process. We have a proven model, but it only works if people follow it!
  • Professional background. Experience running a renovation company is not necessary – our training will help with that! – But experience in management and/or sales is a huge advantage.
  • Adverse to conflict. Someone who can effectively manage a team and resolve conflicts before they escalate.
  • Comfortable taking feedback. Someone who is always looking to improve and does not mind taking advice.
  • Motivated by results. Someone who can set goals, and knows how to achieve them.
  • Makes business happen. Someone who has the drive and motivation to get out there and make their business succeed.
  • Optimist. A positive attitude that focuses on solutions, not problems.
  • People Person: Someone who can build a strong rapport with customers. Someone who can build and lead a team.
  • Resilient. Someone who trusts in the future and their ability to overcome challenges.
  • Cool and Collected: Someone who is not easily phased by problems, big or small, and can focus on moving forwards.

Q3. What does the initial training process look like for new franchisees?

To get you started on your TREND Transformations journey, we’ve put together a simple, and easy to understand, week-long induction course. This process has been carefully honed and perfected over many years and is designed to give you everything you need to run your own successful business.

Over the first week, you’ll learn about the office-based aspects of running the franchise, then it’s straight into the hands-on portion of the training.

While your showroom is being fitted out, you will spend two weeks working with both our technical teams and support teams to make sure you get the best possible start.

Q4. How do you help franchisees achieve a work-life balance?

Just as different people deal with stress and pressure in different ways, so does “work-life” balance mean different things. This diversity is reflected in our support programme, which is designed to suit the individual, rather than provide a “one size fits all” approach.

During their first year, franchisees will receive monthly video conference calls with our Franchise Network Manager, with follow up reviews at 3,6 and 12 months, during which work-life balance is a key topic.

Q5. How has the Covid-19 pandemic changed the way the franchise operates? What extra support and assistance are you offering your franchisees during this time?

Aside from implementing an immediate package of extra support for our franchisees in the form of regular contact, the company has also launched a number of new initiatives. These included a new global marketing campaign to help promote the brand, and a 3D Design tool with associated online quoting and virtual design consultations. We also started a new partnership with Microban®, meaning our franchisees could enhance their offerings even further.

Q6. What plans do you have for the franchise over the next few years in a post-Covid economy?

With the market booming, we plan to go all out in continuing to build the value of the brand. We want our franchisees to have the best possible products and services to offer to their customers. These will include, among other things:

  • New product development, such as our All White range launched in December 2021 and a whole new range of Transcenda colours in response to our research on the latest trends.
  • More emphasis on the eco-friendly nature of our products, continuing our commitment to sustainability.
  • Developing a new sales channel in Bathroom Makeovers, so we can do more for our existing customers whilst continuing to capture new ones.
  • Introducing more flexible customer finance options, so that our franchisees can attract younger customers and first-time buyers.
  • The creation of a new commercial sales division.
