If time management is not your strong suit or there simply are not enough hours in your day, why not run a seasonal franchise? Working for a few months each year sounds like a dream come true but it could be your reality!

A seasonal franchise can be a great way to earn a bit of extra money at a certain time each year. Owning a Christmas Decorators franchise, for example, could help you get in the spirit of the holiday and let you buy those pricier gifts. Owning a pool cleaning business, which would be more active in the summer months, could enable you to splurge on a nice holiday trip.

On the other hand, it’s important to be careful with seasonal franchises. If you only work seasonally, you only earn income seasonally. It takes careful financial planning and budgeting to support yourself all year with money only coming in for a few months. To avoid the need for budgeting, some people choose to own two seasonal franchises, more active at different times throughout the year. One might run a lawn maintenance franchise in the summer and spring, then operate a snow-removal service franchise in the winter months.

For those who get sick of repetition and are always looking for something new, seasonal franchises present an excellent opportunity to shift tasks before boredom settles in. Running a seasonal franchise means that you're never running the same business for too long so everything remains fresh and exciting.

Running your seasonal franchise for all twelve months is also an option, depending on the industry. If you choose to work throughout the year, you will be busier and have higher profits during certain seasons and business will then slow during other months. An ice cream franchise, for example, would make much of its profit during the spring and summer, but could remain open during colder months. If you were only interested in working part-time, the franchise could also have reduced business hours during winter. There is plenty of flexibility with seasonal franchises!

If you think a seasonal franchise may be right for you, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Recruiting

When looking for employment, most people seek full-time work, so it is vital to strategise how you are going to staff your seasonal business. If your busy seasons are winter or summer, consider looking for students on break from classes, as they may be looking to save money for the school year. If spring or autumn is when your business thrives, perhaps stay-at-home parents could be your employees, as they would be looking for work just while their young children are in school.

Budgeting

As mentioned above, it is crucial to budget your finances if you will only have cash flow during part of the year. Consider putting a portion of the money into a savings account for later in the year or choosing a franchise with very low start-up and maintenance fees.

Marketing

If your business services are only needed for a certain window of time, it is important to be visible and accessible. Examine whether it is wiser to advertise all year or to concentrate your efforts on a short time before and during your busy season. Clients from the year before can also be given special attention, making them feel valued and prompting them to work with you again.

Time management

You are likely to be incredibly in-demand during your busy season. Managing your time efficiently can allow you to take on more clients or sell more of your product. Outside of your busy season, it is also important to manage your preparation time. Don’t wait to get everything ready at once, but instead do it little by little throughout the year.
