Looking to invest in a franchise? Why not be patriotic. Subway, McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King…we know that the world’s very top franchises are all from the US (and are all food chains!). But it seems that the number of large, successful franchises based outside of the States is increasing. Many international ones originated in the UK, and are something to be proud of. Read some success stories, and consider joining the club…
Name: InterContinental Hotels Group
Age: 236 (!)
Description: This is the largest hotels company in the world with over 4,600 hotels in 100 countries and with brands including Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza. Franchising is the largest section of its business with more than 3,900 of the hotels being operated under franchise agreements. But it wasn’t always in the travel industry. It began in 1777 when William Bass set up a brewery in Burton-on-Trent called ‘Bass’, moving to pub ownership in the mid-20th century and then to hotels in the 1980s. It may employ more than 17,000 sales professionals around the world, but this massive company’s headquarters are in…that’s right, the little village of Denham, Buckinghamshire, UK.
Quirky fact: In 1876 the Bass red logo, a red triangle, was the first trademark to ever be registered in the UK.
Industry: Business consulting and accountancy/financial
Description: This is a network of over 200 franchisees working as professional consultants specialising in cost, purchase and supply management for companies around the UK and Ireland, helping them to spend less on costs such as communications, energy and rent. Franchisees can work from home and act as an outsourced member of each customer’s management team. They get paid by taking 50% of the savings that they make for their client. A member of the top 400 franchises in Europe, Auditel has won multiple awards including the bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Award 2012 for Outstanding Franchisee Support.
Quirky fact: Auditel manages over 80 different business expenditures.
Name: FiltaFry Plus
Description: Now an internationally recognised company and expanding by granting master licences abroad, FiltaFry Plus provides a deep fat fryer cleaning service for commercial customers including restaurants, hotels, hospitals, education institutions and more. The hot cooking oil is sucked out of the fryer using a vacuum, the fryer is cleaned and the cooking oil is recycled and put back into the fryer. This cuts cooking costs and helps the environment.
Quirky fact: FiltaFry makes its own cleaning machines and therefore anyone who wants to provide the same service can’t do it unless they’re a franchisee.
Name: Card Connection
Description: Card Connection is a distributor of greeting cards. It works by installing stock and display equipment within the retailer customer’s store on a ‘free loan’ basis – that is, the customer never has to buy the stock, it only has to pay for what actually sells. While their customers have to trade throughout the day, the franchisee can be more flexible and only work at hours that suit them. Customers include Spar, Shell, Londis, BP and more.
Quirky fact: Card Connection has over 1,200 cards in its range in all sorts of style.
