Our leader – Ed Reid – moved from being a franchisee to take over as franchisor with his business partner Mags Fuller back in 2017. Ed’s been sat right where you are now and knows the TAB journey personally – he’s committed to helping franchisees by sharing his experience. And Ed's original TAB business is still trading, the franchisee who purchased it has grown the business further too!
As UK franchisor we still run a few territories keeping our finger on the pulse and testing new initiatives, before developing further with the network.
We have been in the UK since 2009, but actually trace our roots back to the USA when in 1990 our founder first developed the business concept to share the power he had experienced of non-exec directors. There are now over 400 TAB franchisees serving over 5,000 business owners each month across 25 countries.

A resounding success: TAB’s annual conference
Leading business franchise, The Alternative Board (TAB) has hailed its recent Annual Conference a resounding success.

The two-day conference, hosted at the Crowne Plaza in Leeds brought together TAB from across the UK to celebrate the franchise’s performance over the past year and provide a platform for learning, network and growth.
The conference included a session on leadership by award-winning speaker Marcus Child plus interactive exit planning panel on how to achieve a successful business sale. An awards evening recognised recent achievements by TAB franchisees and on the second day attendees channelled their power as a team by mastering the haka, under the expertise of a Māori tribe!
“This year’s conference was a resounding success and an incredibly motivating and thought provoking two days,” commented Ed Reid, MD of TAB (UK). “The presentations were fantastic as was the story of TAB member Bridget Petty who shared the realities of exiting a business and the complex journey she could not have completed without her TAB franchisee, Dave McCartney.
“There were some sobering business messages that came from Marcus Child too, such as the fact that employee engagement has fallen to a shocking 10 per cent in the UK. That is something we know is hugely concerning for our TAB members who are running SMEs across the country. So, over the next year, our franchisees will be intensely focussing on providing members with in depth leadership support and strategies to attract, motivate and retain employees.”
To conclude the conference, TAB hosted a compelling panel discussion featuring three TAB members alongside their franchisees, delving into their transformative experiences with TAB and their peer boards. The panel included Jon Bugg, Founder of We Are Doodlebug; Paul Goom, Director and Founder of Goom Electrical Ltd and Pete Wrathmell, Managing Director at Social.
The panellists shared insightful stories about the support and guidance they received through TAB, which not only helped them navigate their entrepreneurial journeys but also achieve substantial growth.
