Introducing Really Awesome Coffee

Really Awesome Coffee have been serving gourmet coffee, hot drinks, frappés, smoothies and food to people at workplaces and events since our first mobile café launched in Coventry in 2010.

We’ve gone from strength to strength to become the largest mobile café network in the UK, currently with over 100 vans across the country, and still growing.

Really Awesome Coffee’s simple concept takes advantage of the huge demand in the over-£10.7bn (and ever-expanding) UK coffee market* but avoids the high overheads and competition on the high street by taking the ‘coffee shop’ directly to customers in our unique mobile café vans, developed continuously since the 2010 original and built in-house in our own workshop.

Wonder what's involved in running a mobile café?

The business is built around a daily coffee round that we help you establish within your allocated, protected territory. Your mobile café will visit local businesses at agreed times each day to serve a full range of gourmet coffees, hot drinks, frappés and smoothies, as well as hot and chilled food options – everything you would expect in a top-quality high street café.

There’s usually a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere at the van, with your day being made up of other people’s breaks! Over time, it feels more like driving around making coffee for your mates than it feels like "work" – something our existing franchise partners attest to.

A large portion of our franchise partners also make significant additional income from optional weekend ‘events’ work.

What makes Really Awesome Coffee unique?

Here at Really Awesome Coffee, we pride ourselves on the high level of training and outstanding, ongoing support we provide our franchise partners. We also strive to be at the forefront of the industry in terms of technological developments and advances.

There are lots of things that we believe make our business a unique prospect, but to highlight a few:
  • The mobile café van – developed and built by us, our coffee vans are uniquely capable, efficient, and environmentally friendly. We are very proud of the vans and provide a full tour on our Virtual Discovery Presentations.
  • The Really Awesome Coffee loyalty app – we make it as easy as possible for our customers to buy from you. Our bespoke app alerts customers when our franchise partners’ vans are on their way and allows them to pre-order their drinks so that they can avoid the queue or ensure they get their coffee fix when they can’t make it out to your van. The loyalty points scheme also keeps your customers coming back time and time again.
  • RAPoS – our bespoke electronic-point-of-sale till system. As well as performing standard functions and linking with the customer app, it also syncs with online coffee route maps and generates a suite of detailed ‘coffee stop-specific’ reports that are vital in tracking performance and ensuring that optimum business development advice is provided.

Training and Support

We want you, as our franchise partner, to be able to concentrate on the most important things – providing great service and building lasting relationships with your customers.

As franchisors it’s our job to make the day-to-day operation of your business as simple and easy as possible. This starts with providing structured, comprehensive training, and continues with regular in-territory support from your Franchise Development Manager and remote support from our dedicated head office team.

Full details on our training and business launch program can be found on our website, however, here’s a quick breakdown for you:
  • Step 1:  After an initial training day we carry out detailed business launch preparations with you.
  • Step 2: You spend 2 weeks with us at our training centre in Coalville, Leicestershire.
  • Step 3:  We spend 2 weeks with you in your territory to launch your business.
  • Step 4: We review your trading data and your Franchise Development Manager visits and contacts you regularly to maintain momentum and keep your business growing.

Investment & Returns

Thanks to the close relationship with our longstanding finance provider partners, the required initial investment is just under £10,000. However, some franchise partners invest more up-front to reduce monthly finance repayments over the first few years.

With turnovers typically exceeding £100,000 per year and an average, combined gross profit margin of over 60% (combined gourmet drinks & food sales) there is plenty of profit to be made for those willing to put in the work and commit to our tried-and-tested system.

Who makes a great Really Awesome Coffee franchise partner?

A lot of our franchise partners cite the fact that, although they work hard, it “doesn’t really feel like work”.

The honest answer to this question? It’s simply someone who will enjoy the social aspect of the role and who, with our assistance, is prepared to put in the short term hard work that is needed to grow any business.

The Next Step

If you think that you might enjoy running your own mobile café, then I’d love to invite you to attend one of our online Virtual Discovery Presentations.

Thank you for taking the time to read our profile and please feel free to request some more information or visit our website to find out more.

Really Awesome Coffee Basingstoke - Jane Ewing

Here Jane Ewing tells us more about her Really Awesome Coffee journey began, and how it has been going since she launched her Really Awesome Coffee van in Basingstoke.

Launched: October 2024

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to becoming a Really Awesome Franchisee?

My career has mainly been spent in retail, but I've also worked in hospitality and logistics. Most of this has been as a Regional Manager capacity at Toys’R’Us and prior to joining Really Awesome Coffee at Card Factory where I covered 30 sites across the South.

Outside of work I'm a keen runner, and a member of my local running club. I run mainly 10Ks and Half-Marathons now I'm getting on a bit, but I have completed the Brighton marathon.

I love traveling, am married to my wife Jen and we have a cute little dog called Aero.

Why did you decide to run your own business and why Really Awesome Coffee specifically?

I plan to retire in just under 5 years, and wanted something that would take me through, away from the stress of the corporate world.

Probably similar to many, I love coffee so a coffee van was an ideal fit! I originally approached Really Awesome Coffee around 2020 but decided it wasn't quite the right time to make the move. I enquired again in 2024 and embarked on my journey!

I chose a franchise as I wanted to have the back up support for launching a new business. The virtual presentation and day up at HQ gave me all the information I needed to feel it was the right thing for me and for me to make the decision to join.

Tell us a bit about your training at Head Office and your business launch.

Training was great! Matt - the in-house, expert barista and Franchisee Trainer - was absolutely brilliant. I felt it was relaxed and at probably the right speed to take everything on board.

The business launch was equally good and felt well supported by Hospitality Support Officer, Andy. I didn't really have any major concerns other than remembering how to make all the drinks! But by the end of the two weeks’ support I felt really comfortable with everything.

I had a very positive reaction from customers particularly in relation to the look of the van and the quality and taste of the coffee!

How have you found the ongoing training and support?

Ongoing training and support overall has been fine. Andy was great though the initial period, and James and Leo were also supportive when out with me over the scheduled visits.

I would say that some of the calls with the FDM (Sam) I personally have found a little frustrating as sometimes on pre-arranged calls there hasn't seemed to be much of a plan and he seems distracted. Topics repeated and information previously discussed repeated makes you feel not listened to.

Head Office has been very helpful and great at looking into things and coming back to you.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to invest in their first franchise?

I would say speak to a few franchisees to find out the positives and negatives and what is really involved not just on the serving part of the day but outside of that.

I was also a bit naive on the extra time needed for cleaning, ordering, sorting supplies etc which I think you might want to be aware of. It's much quicker once you get into a routine.
