Kumon

Description:

Kumon is a private tutoring company. It was developed by high school maths teacher Toru Kumon, who created maths worksheets for his young son who was performing poorly at the subject in school. As Toru Kumon’s son started studying past his grade level, friends and neighbours of the family began to notice and asked if Kumon could also teach their children his method. This was the beginning of The Kumon Method of learning.

The Kumon Institute of Education was established in Osaka, Japan in 1958. There are now Kumon centres in 49 countries worldwide, including 14 countries throughout Europe. Over 4.2 million children were enrolled in Kumon education programmes in June 2016. Kumon now helps children with language and maths, advancing their abilities at their own pace.

Kumon’s mission is to help all children acquire basic academic skills and become self-learners. The Kumon system of learning is considered an excellent method for developing academic excellence, character and life skills. They aim to improve both education and societies worldwide.

Franchise System

The first Kumon franchise in Tokyo opened in 1962. In 1974, the first overseas Kumon Math Centre opened in New York. The first European Kumon Centre was established in Germany in 1979. The franchise currently ranks highly as a top global franchise and as tutoring service franchise.

Kumon claim to have the lowest franchise start up costs in their industry, including €1,000 initial franchise fee and €1,000 for promotional materials and answer books to get started. Kumon provide up to €17k to get franchisees up and running. They also research suitable locations for franchisees to develop their business. Franchisees receive ongoing training and support, including a branch manager and field consultants for guidance, and monthly meetings with other franchisees in the same area. Kumon promotes a rewarding and meaningful career by giving students an academic advantage that will stand to them.

Kumon franchisees benefit from the brand and their promotional materials and campaigns. They also benefit from national marketing, the Kumon website and their own microsite, and their call centre.
