Case study: Mike Griffiths, Swansea franchisee
With Thanks franchisee Mike Griffiths from Swansea talks with Mark Winter- Goodwin, the National Franchise Manager about his background and experience so far as a With Thanks franchisee.
Mark: Mike could you tell me about your background?
Mike: Yes, for 20 years I was a retail jeweller, then in 1983 I purchased an overnight parcel service. This went well and I sold it as a going concern in 1986. I then worked in the motor trade in managerial roles for 17 years and finally as a self-employed PPI adviser.
Mark: So a varied and interesting career with plenty of business and management experience. What lead you to With Thanks?
Mike: I attended the National Franchise Exhibition at the NEC. There was a lot to choose from but I had a good long chat with the With Thanks team, who were there. They also had an existing franchisee on the stand who I spoke to. I liked the idea so I left my details.
Shortly after the show I was contacted by you Mark and I asked for the contact details of existing franchisees and I really did my homework, asking them about their performance, including sales, growth, profits and potential and really to see if the information I had been given by Barnack With Thanks stacked up - and yes it did.
I then attended a Discovery Day held at Barnack Head office in Peterborough which included meeting the team, a tour of the premises and importantly, a good discussion on how a With Thanks franchise works.
I was really impressed. I found out that With Thanks is part of the Barnack group of companies which includes Barnack Confectionery Ltd who are a major player in the confectionery industry. They are a large company that employs many people with a large office and a warehouse of 150,000 square feet. Knowing this was important to me as it meant security, my investment was safe and they had the man power to give me the support I expected.
Mark: What happened next?
Mike: I went away and thought about it and made the decision to start with the 300 box package. I was accepted by With Thanks and my training and launch dates were booked.
Mark: How relevant was the training?
Mike: Very. All aspects were talked about and discussed over two days at Barnacks offices. I had a morning out with Dale, the local franchisee, to see how the boxes were serviced and see the cash coming in. I then signed my franchisee agreement and was officially welcomed aboard by the team. Next, I just had to wait for my stock to be delivered, ready for my launch.
Mark: How was the launch?
Mike: The launch went very well. The team lead by you got down to me early on Monday morning, well prepared with maps of my area. We then split up into teams of two and methodically covered Swansea and Llanelli using the maps prepared by Barnack With Thanks.
When the team covered a road it was highlighted so I knew it had been covered. The team brought back important information on where each box had been placed so I could populate my database, which was supplied as part of my franchise package.
The launch took 4 days with all 300 boxes sited by the end of day 4. I even got calls that week from customers who wanted more sweets, it went very well.
Mark: Where are you now in terms of box numbers?
Mike: I have now grown to have over 500 boxes located through my own efforts and also with the help of the With Thanks siting team who came down to help me grow. This was a free service and I have also upped the number of sweets in each box to 23 so this has produced extra sales. I am now achieving over £5,000 in sales every month.
Mark: What are your plans from here?
Mike: I now plan to grow to 750 sites and increase my units in each box to 30 and I know that the With Thanks team will be there to support my growth. I can really see the potential in my business; so far it has done exactly what I was told it would do. Also I am keen to help on the launches of new franchisees to give them the benefit of my experience so far.
