Why I got into Franchising?
At 53 years old and after thirty years in print finishing, I was made redundant. I had no intention of looking for another job in print finishing as the trade had changed so much and there was no enjoyment in the job anymore. Being made redundant had been on the cards for about four months, so I had plenty of time to look around at other opportunities. Being over fifty is a no go in the present job market. Time to be my own boss.

The way forward was Franchising. Proven business formula, on going support and a far higher chance of success than setting up your own business.

Why Oven Rescue?
Looking to buy a Franchise I made a list of requirements that suited my needs. No premises, no employees, a business that was based indoors (British weather can easily restrict potential earnings!). The list was soon narrowed down to oven cleaning.

I looked at three oven cleaning Franchises. The first one charged a ridiculous monthly management fee and I could not see how I could ever make a living out of it. The second one had an open day, which I went to, but I just could not connect with the people running the Franchise. I just did not see building a working relationship with them.

Then I met Mike, totally up front and not afraid to hide anything. Mike answered all my questions and his passion for the business soon came across, I knew this was a person I could work with. Oven Rescue was the Franchise for me.

What are the positives working for Oven Rescue?
Mike sets you up with everything you need, from kitting out the van to stationery. He has been a great help on the advertising front and is available to answer any queries promptly. The vans are well sign written and look very professional. Having a land line number as well as a mobile has been a great help to my business as people like to deal with local tradesman, they feel they can trust them rather than ringing an 0800 number. Mike also encourages you to contact other Oven Rescue franchisees to discuss aspects of the business, another area of support. The leaflets Mike has produced are of a high standard and I have had quite a few jobs resulting from these leaflets with new and existing clients commenting on the professional look of them.

What was your background experience / previous employment?
I have been in the print finishing business for thirty years, working for four companies during this time. As a production manager I worked in production planning, estimating and invoicing. All of which requires an eye for detail and a need for perfection, which helps in running my own Franchise.

How have you found the training and support?
The training, wow! Second to none. Mike has a no nonsense approach, straight in there cleaning ovens from day one. No class rooms. No videos. Straight on the job. At first it was a bit daunting but after three days it all fell into place. There is no substitute for going into people’s homes and cleaning a variety of ovens and interacting with the customers, which is a vital part of the job. The second week was very enjoyable and Mike was only too happy to pass on as much information as you asked for. After two weeks I was confident to go it alone.

The support is really good, I had a couple of issues in the first few weeks whilst on jobs, but Mike answered his phone straight away and was able to guide me through to complete the jobs without the customers ever knowing things were not going quite to plan!

What are you looking forward to as your business grows?
At present I am really enjoying running my own business. The aim is to build up a good customer base and to get referrals, which is already happening. Positive word of mouth will give me a great sense that I’m doing a good job.

There are plenty of options going forward such as expanding my area, taking on a second vehicle. For now I am content working for myself, developing the business to earn a nice living and work the hours that suit me.
