Paul Thomson - Franchisee with NBC Bird and Pest Solutions
I had been looking at business opportunities for about two years. At the time I was working in the general insurance industry and had been doing so for 10 years and it was time for a change. It was time to take the leap and start my own business as the success or failure of the enterprise would then be entirely down to me. As I did not have a particular business in mind I decided that going down the franchise route would be safest direction to go as I would be working within a proven business model.
I attended various franchise exhibitions and subscribed to all of the franchise magazines. When I saw the advert for NBC Bird and Pest Solutions in Franchise Direct it was the first business that ticked all of my boxes. I then carried out research on the pest control sector and NBC in particular and decided that it was a business with great potential for growth. The environmental ethos was great and the work with birds of prey made it unique within its sector. What was great about NBC is that it is the type of business that you can start off running on your own and then employ staff as the business grows.
The first hurdle to overcome was financing the business. I had some savings but needed to borrow £20,000 from the bank. I arranged a meeting with my local branch of Lloyds TSB. Considering we were in the middle of the credit crunch I was very pleasantly surprised to find that having checked out the company they were happy to lend me the money I required.
After a four week intensive training programme with NBC I started trading on 1st August 2009. Although it was very daunting to go out and start canvassing for business the backup and marketing from NBC head office was excellent and the other franchisees are also very supportive. On the last day of training I was given my first lead which I converted two weeks later and completed the job by the end of August.
I have now been trading for 4 months. I am fully booked up with work for the next few weeks and at this rate I will be looking to take on my first member of staff in the first half of next year.
