Go-Kart Party Franchise
Case Study: Clive Matkin
Clive Matkin from Oxfordshire, tells us how he and his family have made a phenomenal success of their Go-Kart Party franchise in just 12 months…
Although Clive Matkin had an extremely high profile job, running a computer manufacturer in the UK and Ireland, after 20 years of working in the IT industry he had finally had enough.
“It was a highly pressurised job,” he recalls.” I had a huge amount of responsibility and I was spending half my week in hotel rooms. I finally came to the conclusion that I wanted a new life, I wanted to do something different and I wanted to do it with my family.”
Clive began by running a small franchise from home, and then he soon began to look at other businesses that he could run alongside his existing one. Having done his research, he finally came across Go-Kart Party.
“Go-Kart Party immediately appealed to me, because it was a weekend business and it was something that I could do with the family. Having five kids, myself and Ann know how time consuming it is to organise a party, so we felt that we had more than enough experience to do it for other people!”
While initially Clive and Ann were happy to run Go-Kart Party at the weekend, little did they know that the business would quickly take on a life of its own.
“I never expected it to take off the way it did,” remarks Clive. “And certainly not in such a short space of time, it was March 2005 that we started up, and in March 2006, just 12 months later, I did 34 birthday parties in that month alone, and 44 different events in April. It’s become my main business.”
Although birthday parties are his best source of income, Clive also does the likes of corporate events, carnivals, school fetes and air shows, and is now at the point where he is taking bookings several weeks in advance. Having worked hard, with the help of Go-Kart Party, to find suitable venues, he currently has a base of 15 different centres from which he operates, meaning that he can offer his services to almost the entire Oxfordshire area.
“Indoor centres make a fantastic venue, as they have a lot of walk-thru traffic, and once people see the Go-Kart Party in operation, they’re sold. Initially we did a lot of advertising, but the business is really self-promoting. We’re at the stage now where we can hardly keep up with demand, so we may have to look at expanding next year.”
Having been amongst the first to take up a Go-Kart Party franchise, Clive is delighted that he has made the right choice, not only with the business itself, but also with the people who run it.
“The people at Go-Kart Party have been unbelievable to work with; nothing is ever too much trouble. There are no rigid blueprints that you are prohibited from stepping out of; everybody has their own ideas and we all listen to each other.
“We’re all on a first name basis – it’s like we’re all part of a family, not just a name on a contract, so much that the people from Go-Kart Party were guests when Ann and myself got married in August 2006!”
And as well as being part of a new family, Clive has found that he gets to see a lot more of his own. “I always have at least one of my children around helping out,” he says. “Sometimes Ann comes with me too, and if we ever an empty time slot we like to use it up as a family; our two and a half year old has just learned how to work the karts!”
As with any new venture, there are certain demands that have to be met, and Clive is constantly on the go, but he is happy to be busy doing something that brings such a broad range of benefits, and he is quick to recommend Go-Kart Party to others.
“This is a job about entertaining, you have to remember, that you are primarily a children’s entertainer; so if you want to work in a business where every day you are looking at both the faces of smiling happy children, as well as their satisfied parents, and get paid for it, then this is definitely for you – there’s not many jobs where you will get that kind of pleasure with an 80% gross margin!”
GREAT! WHAT'S MY NEXT STEP?
