Stuart Wright, A North and East Yorkshire Success Story

EnviroVent established a franchise operation in 2009 to target sales of sustainable ventilation and heat recovery products to the private rented and homeowner market. They already had a successful £13 million business dealing with social housing and I knew straight away the franchise was for me after seeing the company at a Discovery Day. The results of my EnviroVent Franchise has been over 500 orders for 2010 with a turnover in excess of £350k. 2011 is looking even better but it has taken hard work and 100% dedication to achieve.

Primarily, the innovative products eliminate condensation and mould problems in properties, but our products also provide health benefits for people with Asthma and respiratory problems. Having already experienced one winter season and the excessive number of enquiries, I knew that I needed to be better prepared to deal with the demand from distressed customers during the “condensation” season.

In order to capitalise on the opportunity to maximise revenues I needed to be able to respond quickly, efficiently and effectively to a deluge of free survey requests from people who’s properties were suffering from condensation and mould. I knew that if I could wow my customers with these sorts of efficiencies, I would stand a better chance of receiving more glowing testimonials as well as referrals and repeat business.

I set about recruiting sufficient staff to cope with the anticipated demand. This included a full time surveyor and a full time sub-contracted installer. The surveyor position would need to be filled by someone who had the right attitude and personality to be able to follow the sales system and close their own sales as well as create accurate surveys for the installer to interpret.

I decided to target graduates for the sales position and created an innovative advertisement entitled “How would it feel if you never had to work a day in your life?” The response was excellent and I was able to recruit a very capable graduate who was hungry to learn. The result has been a 75% conversion rate of quotes through the winter months.

We have achieved much of our success to date by making it policy to tell as many people about the dangers of poor indoor air quality as possible, this has included becoming an Ambassador for Asthma UK where I regularly gives talks, presenting at numerous landlord fairs and forums as well as networking events, plus writing a regular blog called Mr Mould.

Becoming known as an expert in the field has led to exciting opportunities such as an introduction to TV’s Sarah Beeny who has promised to feature EnviroVent products in her next television series. I also became involved with York University Entrepreneurs society in their “Apprentice” competition, where the final task was to advertise EnviroVent’s “Fresh Air Fountain” on Campus TV and Radio.

EnviroVent continues to develop new and exciting ways to promote the business and the product offering and I think we are a perfect match in ambition. An example of this is recently I noticed that the local landlord fairs had dried up due to cuts in government funding so we teamed up with a local events company to run them privately, with the assistance of local authorities who will promote the events to all of the private landlords in their respective regions. The key is to think innovatively.

The results of my EnviroVent North and East Yorkshire team’s effort of over 500 orders for 2010 with a turnover in excess of £350k has not been easy and I have drawn on some fantastic support from the franchisor when I have needed it. We are well on target to beat this total in 2011 as well as increasing margin’s and average order values. The Franchise has proved a real success for me and it was a fantastic decision to take on the franchise!
