Once I finally made the decision to go it alone, and after much research, there was only one franchise which stood out head and shoulders above the rest, and that was Open House. I had been in various roles within property for many years but wanted to branch out on my own and the Open House franchise presented a really fantastic opportunity. The comprehensive training was excellent and covered absolutely everything and I couldn’t wait to get out and start running my business. There is also a large network of agents who all pull together to help each other so from day one I’ve never felt left on my own. I now actually enjoy going to work each morning and not many people can say that now, can they?
Having had an established estate agency business, since 1996, based in a large town in our area, with expensive leased office premises, staff, cars etc etc, I decided in 2008, to convert it into a home-based operation, due to the rapidly changing buyer habits, escalating premises costs, and the greater reliance on the internet. This worked quite successfully, but in 2018, I began to investigate the possibility of joining a franchise. I looked into several of the more well-known options, but they were very expensive, and all required me to fully rebrand my business as themselves. As I had spent many years building up my brand and reputation locally, I was not happy to potentially lose that advantage, and effectively begin again. I fully understand why new businesses would fully brand as the franchise, but for me, that was not really an appealing option. I therefore began to spread my net wider and came across some lesser known options, of which Open House was one. Interestingly, I was working jointly on a property with a regional agent, who at the time happened to be an Open House franchise, and in discussions, she recommended I contact Alex for a chat. On discussions with Alex and Ellie, it soon became apparent, that they were on my wavelength, and far from being negative about taking on an existing business, and me wishing to retain my branding, they were happy to look at the bigger picture and suggested sub-branding. This seemed the ideal option for me, as it allowed me to benefit from the collective support, organisation and compliance backup of the franchise, but enable me to retain my identity too. After nearly 4 years, this has proven to be a good choice, and I am extremely happy with the arrangements which have enabled my business to continue, with my local name, but with the benefits of a supportive, professional and friendly team, in the background.
In 2017 I was at a bit of an impasse after taking redundancy from the only job I had known for over 30 years - so what to do now? After many conversations with my wife (who happens to be a careers advisor), it became clear that property and more specifically, Estate Agency would be a perfect fit for me. I researched many franchises and spoke with friends who worked in property and accountancy and Open House seemed to offer the best solution for me. Starting your own business is a daunting process, but with Open House you have the ready-made support, training, branding and marketing that is invaluable and can take up a lot of your time and money initially. The support from the owners and all at Head Office has been second to none and I still reach out for help now. There is also a network of other franchisees who are always willing to help, from the most mundane question up to the really big topics – everyone joins in. They offer advice on the property market in general but also on running the business side too. Now being able to offer advice to the newer franchisees is a great feeling for me. This is the perfect job for me, covering so many different skills that it never, ever gets boring. My one regret? Not doing it sooner!
I began my career as an Estate Agent with Open House in August 2017, having previously worked in retail management for 20 years. Ten years ago we were at a crossroads with our exceptionally busy jobs. We were hardly at home, always travelling the length and breadth of the country, when we decided to do something totally different, that would give us more time at home. We always had that interest in property, developing and building etc, and the decision was made to look at estate agent franchising. Terry did a lot of homework on different franchises for estate agents. He called lots of established franchisees at random, and the one that caught his eye the most was Open House. Help is always at hand, a great team! From day one the training was thorough, and it’s still on-going today, keeping us compliant with all new information and regulations – again, more support! Terry and I thoroughly enjoy our “new jobs”, with the flexibility and better lives that it has given us…we have never looked back. After years in sales and having tried different routes like housing and social services I always felt that I wanted to do business my way. I guess I have felt unappreciated and pressured at times working for someone that finally made me realise I have so much more to offer and at the same time wanted to enjoy what I do. Having started my estate agency career back in 1988, I decided to take a short break from selling houses to do some property developing in 2008. After a couple of years I missed the comradery and the buzz that estate agency brings. Having worked for myself, I couldn’t even contemplate going to work for another estate agency that would be constantly watching over my shoulder and telling me that I wasn’t doing things their way! What I did know is that with all the new rules, regulations, AML and compliance that was now needed, I know I couldn’t start up again without professional back up. Moving on into our seventh year now with the Open House family, we are proud to be a part of this ever-expanding company. From humble beginnings, working out of a converted garage, we now have a wonderful high street office, three directors and some wonderful staff. A few years ago, I would never have dreamt I would be running my own successful estate agency business.
