Aspray Franchisee Advertising Campaign on the Move!

Read Gavin Stirruip’s humorous account of an advertising campaign he embarked on: one man and hundreds of Aspray leaflets! Using his initiative and desire to promote his Aspray franchise opportunity during the summer floods in Tewksbury and Hull, he relates how one man can achieve a lot in one day…

Call me an ambulance chaser but following the summer floods in Tewksbury & Hull I decided to go in search of, what I knew, had to be a serious amount of work. I had some leaflets printed advertising Aspray as a flood restoration specialist (as that’s where our experience is based).

I went on those tough streets in the cold, dark and rain and letter dropped every house in Tewksbury & Hull! I was chased by dogs, insulted by home owners, had leaflets thrown back at me and even had a run in with a postman who demanded I stopped posting leaflets on his patch!

I put Aspray signs up at the side of the main roads into both Hull and Tewksbury and put adverts in the local papers. I recall laughing to myself, as I considered the amount of advertising I had put out, it gave the impression that I was a large national company with thousands of employees and offices nationwide, but little did they know – there was only me working out of the back of a car! At that stage I didn’t even have any builders to do the work!

I sat in my hotel waiting for the phone to ring ….. and it did!

A loss adjuster working for a national company had been referred to my advertising by a policyholder and he asked me if I could help him out. “Absolutely” I said, “that’s what I’m here for”. He asked me to price a job for him in Tewksbury so I was there in a flash, gave him a price same day and he gave me authorisation immediately.

The next day a national insurer rang me and asked if I could do another job - of course I could – I gave them a price and they said go ahead! I still didn’t have anyone to do the work but I didn’t see that as a problem. I have a lot of connections nationwide from my days as a project planner so I made a few calls and quickly got both jobs covered.

Further jobs began to pour in! I was on holiday in the south of France for two weeks during September and I must have got a job a day by telephone; it was amazing I couldn’t believe my good fortune.

It was very satisfying to be in a position to help people in their hour of need, we provided a much-needed service to the general public and all our customers were grateful for the assistance we provided.
