For 20 years, Mike enjoyed a highly successful career in industrial product, service and energy businesses, working with blue chip companies across Europe, Asia and the Americas. He held senior engineer, project management and business unit management positions before advancing in 2005 to become the youngest ever Managing Director of Teradyne Diagnostic Solutions Ltd, a $100m global business. In 2009, looking for a new venture and a business which would provide him and his family with security and passive income for the future, he began to look at franchises.
Says Mike, “I was looking to take control of my own investments and knew I wanted something with a proven track record that was delivering the results I was looking for. Probably the main criteria for me was finding an organisation with the right values and ethics, where I felt a synergy with the people involved. I would learn about the business model afterwards. Having looked around at the National Franchise Exhibition, I narrowed it down to two companies: Platinum Property Partners and Expense Reduction Analysts.
I knew property made sense as an investment vehicle and had always wanted to invest throughout my career, but with the demands of corporate life just never found the time to do it! So when I discovered PPP, which had a business plan that would not only allow me to invest very wisely in property for the longer term, but would also provide me with a significant income stream, that was immediately highly attractive to me. In the case of Expense Reduction Analysts, I had always very much enjoyed the business development element of my corporate career and their business model – which is exceptionally good - would allow me to continue this kind of work, but in a much more flexible and rewarding way. I certainly wasn’t deliberately looking for two franchises, but the two companies’ values, their flexibility in terms of working hours and the fact that the combined income/asset building financial prospects and projections exceeded our requirements and expectations seemed too exciting an opportunity to pass up!
My wife and I were very up-front from the start about our wish to take on both franchises, and the Directors of PPP and Expense Reduction Analysts reacted in just the way we hoped and expected they would, given what we understood to be their ethics and win-win approach to business. The businesses are non-competitive and complimentary; both Directors saw that I was looking to make a long-term commitment and assured me they were happy that I had the ability to operate both their franchise models in tandem, which, in turn, gave me confidence. From PPP’s point of view, the cost management knowledge I will gain from Expense Reduction Analysts is certainly likely to help both my own business and theirs and the two sit together very well for me.
I don’t see any problems in the future, only more opportunities in both business areas, as I will drive both franchises to be more successful through the contacts I’ll be making. For me, it’s all about attitude – I believe your attitude determines your outcome and I am extremely optimistic! In my career so far there have been testing times, and I am under no illusions about the hard work I’ll have to put in at the start, but I know from experience that when you go in to something with a positive approach you learn more and will be much better off for it.”
Mike anticipates that within 5 years he will have either reached, or be very close to financial freedom, with a passive income that sustains his lifestyle and continually increasing asset growth. On the one hand he will have a successful consulting practice with Expense Reduction Analysts and, on the other, a sizeable and profitable property portfolio with PPP.
“The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from this experience so far is to live life on my terms. When you’re in a corporate world, you can think you’re successful and doing well – you build a career and climb the ladder, but when you look over the wall, what do you really see? You have to put the ladder against the right wall in the first place, so that you achieve your goals and dreams. And that’s exactly what PPP and Expense Reduction Analysts are helping me to do.”
