Peter had never heard of franchising until he saw NBC’s website and had no idea that it was a means of running his own business with the added support of an established brand behind him.

NBC Bird and Pest Solutions is uniquely positioned in the marketplace as the UK's largest nationwide company to offer falconry and proofing as methods of bird control in addition to a complete range of pest control services.

This was ideal for Peter, who joined NBC in February 2008 and didn’t have any previous experience in the bird and pest control sector, but had a hobby of falconry and the desire to be successful. Peter said, "When I discovered the possibility of becoming an NBC franchisee and the prospect of turning my hobby of falconry into a business, I immediately engaged my youngest son (also a falconer) with the prospect of him joining my ‘empire’ at a later date."

He recalls the interviewing stage and comments that, "When I went down to Norfolk to meet NBC’s managing director, John Dickson, it was as much about me interviewing NBC as it was about me being interviewed. Following our initial discussion, I was introduced by John to the rest of the team, and was immediately struck by the set-up and professionalism of the organisation and the apparent commitment of each and every person I met. After spending a few minutes talking to the staff at Head Office, I decided there and then that NBC was the type of organisation that I could work with. Luckily, my perceptions have proven correct."

Peter is enjoying his career with NBC and comments that he has, "achieved a number of notable successes. For example, with help, guidance and assistance, I have managed to secure contracts almost equivalent to my annual salary as a lecturer. However, more importantly to me personally, is the illusion that I virtually stopped working for a living when I joined NBC, since, for me, flying birds of prey is not work."
