Finding Success with a Franchise Opportunity

What should you be looking for in a Franchisor? It’s not an easy task! You are about to hand over a large sum of money and this will be the most life-changing decision you have ever made, for good or bad. Hopefully it’ll be the best decision you could ever hope to make but to give you the best chance possible you need to be sure that the promises in the brochure match up to the real experience of the people on the ground.
So, how can you increase your chances of picking the right franchise company? There’s a lot to take in but we would suggest that by following the rules below you greatly increase your chances of picking the right business for you to partner with.
1) How long has the Franchise been operational? Less than 1 year? Are you going to be someone else’s guinea pig? Cloudy2Clear has been an established franchise for 5 years!
2) Does the Franchise actively promote their Franchisees on their customer facing website? Or are they hidden away behind a call centre? If the Franchisees aren’t listed then you have to ask yourself why!
3) It’s a fact that 80% of Franchisees thrive after their first year but unfortunately that means that 20% do not and every Franchise has examples of these. What does the Franchisor have to say about this? Why did the 20% leave? Is it because they refused to follow the rules or because the core business is wrong?
4) A Franchise contract is a very big beast indeed. Does your prospective business partner actively encourage you to take the contract to a Franchise solicitor before you join?
5) Have you done any market research in your area? How much demand is there? Give yourself a chance. Ask 30 people if they would be interested in the product/service that the Franchise is providing at the price they advise you to sell if at. If over 40% say yes then you should be onto a winner. For example, have you ever seen or heard about a steamed up double glazed unit?
6) How big are the territories in terms of population? The area needs to be big enough to give you the best chance of success but not too big as you’d be overwhelmed. We suggest the Yellow Pages areas are as good a guide as any as they have been split by demography and wealth.
7) How much business development training is there? Running your own business is not just about ‘doing the job’. There’s cashflow, accounts, VAT, marketing and profitability reporting to be done. You need to have your finger on the pulse at all times or you’ll head off in the wrong direction and lose your money fast! It’s no good you buying a Franchise, get given a manual and then your told it’s all up to you. Will the Franchisor help? If so how?
8) Can you speak to the existing Franchisees BEFORE you meet the Franchisor? What’s their experience? After all, they all went through the same process that you’re doing now!
