Whilst the business, which specialised in the supply and fit of quality wood/laminate flooring and carpets, was turning in a healthy profit, the market in which Rob was trading had become far more fragmented and operating within these conditions meant there was limited potential for the business to generate any significant upturn in sales.

What Rob was looking for was a new business venture which would not only offer him a stimulating challenge, but also one which had the capacity to deliver an enhanced income by providing a service in a sector which represented an untapped (as opposed to saturated) market.

Armed with these two key prerequisites, Rob set about researching new business opportunities. As an established businessman, he quickly recognised the extensive benefits associated with buying a franchise and focussed his efforts on exploring the myriad of franchise options currently available.

A trip to the Olympia Franchise Exhibition last March brought Rob into contact with Basic System and there was an immediate spark of attraction to the business, since the franchise met all of Rob’s specific requirements – with the added advantage of operating in a market which represented a natural comfort zone for Rob.

“I was very keen to invest in a business which offered a degree of diversity, which was not limited to delivering just one very specific service – essentially I wanted to steer well clear of the typical “one trick pony” franchise prospects. Basic System’s instant appeal was a combination of the fact that there were many strands to the business, in addition to the huge scope associated with bringing a highly successful European company to the UK,” says Rob.

Following Rob’s encounter with the brand at Olympia, he invested time in finding out more about Basic System and even visited the company’s head quarters in Nice. The more information he gleaned, the more impressed he was with the business opportunity buying a Basic System franchise represented.

“The challenge of bringing this hugely successful business to the UK was exactly what I was looking for. I was confident that the quality of the products and the outstanding results that could be achieved using the Basic System methodology offered a compelling proposition to potential customers," continues Rob.

By September, Rob was ready to commit to buying his Basic System franchise and embarked upon a two-week intensive training course in France, which provided a thorough grounding on the business, leaving Rob ready to start his new venture in January 2008.

Only a few weeks into the New Year, Rob has already completed a parquet sanding and sealing assignment for a domestic client, restoring a 40-year old wood floor to mint condition, and has just performed on-site tests for a 700 sq metre concrete renovation project in a factory.

As for the future, Rob is brimming with ideas in terms of businesses, which could benefit from Basic System’s “midas touch.” With 7 different sectors to Basic System, Rob is initially focussing his core efforts on the company’s unique concrete sealing and shining process and then plans to target the marble renovation market.

One thing is for sure, this business definitely provides all the challenges and opportunities that Rob was missing out on in his former venture – and most importantly, it is capable of delivering that all-important sense of fulfilment AND enhanced income Rob desires.
