Phat Pasty Featured on BBC Working Lunch
January 11, 2010
Declan Curry introduced the Phat Pasty Co as two of his favourite things…’great food and a successful business’.
Following the great acclaim as Lunch Multiple Retailer of The Year 2009 in November and the interest shown from the Government backed initiative, Befranchising in the North East, the Working Lunch programme were intrigued to understand what made the Phat Pasty Co business franchise so successful.
They sent their reporter Rob Pittam to Milton Keynes to see how the surf-themed Phat Pasty Company has found a winning formula to grow in a recession, mixing a traditional business model with a fun and relaxed outlook.
Everything from their name (meaning sexy and cool) to their iconic fleet of VW-camper-style “Phat Vans” is designed to turn up the heat on the mobile food-to-go market and take it into the 21st Century.
Thanks to the mobile nature of the business and its unique branding, this is a business that is quickly established with a low set up cost and can deliver exceptional profits
The company has already grown from one van to five in Milton Keynes, and is now available as a franchise, with franchisees signing up across the UK. A recent partnership in the North East with ‘Be Franchising’, a government backed company who specialise in developing employment opportunities through franchising will see five new franchisees in Newcastle opening in the next few months.
In the feature Graham Mylchryst, Managing Director of Be Franchising explained why he has was so impressed with the Phat Pasty Co franchise, the benefits of franchising and his excitement and plan to roll out more Phat Pasty franchises across the North East region.
Speaking on the growth and success to the company, Paul Clark, Phat Controller of The Phat Pasty Company said: ‘the key is that we have been through all of the stages of development that we would expect a franchisee to go through. This is a business that can be started with just one van, working from home, with minimal overheads and costs and then can be grown into a sizable management franchise business’’
Laura Clark commented “Our whole family is passionate about good food, and above all, we wanted to be part of something fun, dynamic and exciting’’.
“The inspiration for the business came about after a trip to see family in Cornwall, the lifestyle is so fun and full of life that we wanted to encapsulate that in a company and take it to the public every morning. Already we’ve had some amazing feedback, and having people greet our van with smiles on their faces is a great rewarding start to every day. Our mission is to take our Phat brand to every town across the UK and make The Phat Pasty Co a household name’’
