As part of the specialist dance provision, Premier Sport was asked to monitor how the patients felt before, during and after the classes. The dance sessions have elements of fitness with a fun twist as they dance to their favourite chart hits!! The feedback shows a dramatic improvement in how the patients felt.
Given the overwhelming impact of these sessions, Premier Sport is now providing two classes a week for the patients.
Premier Sport dance instructor, Olivia Shaw said: “A big part of the session, which helps with the enjoyment and success of each session, is taking time to get to know the patients. For example, by knowing what kind of week they have had prior to the session or what songs they want to dance to. This gives us a good indication to what they will want to do during the dance session, which we then cater for.”
“The sessions provide the patients with a fun and learning environment which can only mean good things for their mental health and wellbeing. It’s also inspiring for me to see the patients dancing with a big smile on their faces.”
Another noticeable improvement in the ward has been the significant weight loss to the patients which was been a big concern for the nurses and staff at the unit prior to Premier Sport’s intervention.
Olivia went on to say: “One of the patients attending the dance class has lost just over a stone. Further to this the patient is feeling much better about herself, and her self-confidence is building.”
