Children’s play centre operator Funky Monkeys has opened a new play centre at Market Place, the mixed-use scheme in the heart of Romford that combines retail, leisure, offices and residential elements. It is the first Funky Monkeys unit to open in the Home Counties with previous units located in the Midlands.
They have taken the first floor unit of 4,560 sq ft (424 sq m) on a 15-year lease, this recent letting increases the whole schemes occupancy up to almost 90%.
Funky Monkeys offers premium children’s indoor centre, combining play facilities together with an excellent healthy eating café. Funky Monkeys caters for children under 8 years old, providing something for all ages.
Nigel Lewis of Beadie Group, the developers of Market Place, commented:
“Funky Monkeys offer a clean, safe and stimulating environment for children and we are delighted to welcome them to The Market Place in Romford. This is the latest letting to follow on from recent lettings to Aldi, Iceland and Subway as well as to investment company Grove & Dean. We are also in negotiations for the last remaining units in Market Place."
Romford will be the 7th centre, other Funky Monkeys centres can be found in the Midlands area in Birmingham, Warwick and Bicester, this new centre is the first one in London and the south.
Funky Monkeys Franchisor Zoe Hearn said:
“We are excited to be heading south and expanding our franchise, The Market Place Romford was an ideal location for our next centre, we look forward to continuing success.”
When completed Market Place will see the development of 6,652 sq m (71,612 sq ft) of integral retail and leisure space including the medical centre, Tollgate House a now completed 1,243 sq m (13,388 sq ft), as well as 115 one and two-bedroom apartments, the new facility for the Romford Shopping Hall (which is already partially opened and will feature a new Manna Food Hall) and an already operating 251-space car park. Telford Homes is marketing the residential element of the scheme while Travelodge is operating the 80-bedroom hotel.
The £50 million mixed use scheme is being developed by Pickenham (Romford) Limited, a division of Beadie Group, on a 3.5-acre site on the northern edge of the town’s famous open air market.
Phase 3 will comprise three further units totalling approximately 36,000 sq ft are due to come on the market this year. The units, which are adjacent to TJ Hughes and have frontage onto the Market Place, may be sub-divided into units of approximately 6,000 sq ft each.
Gilbert Bath, Gooch Cunliffe Whale and Stiles Harold Williams and AC Commercial are the agents for Market Place. Wright Silverwood acted for Funky Monkeys.
