Home Instead Senior Care wins Ireland’s Best Emerging Franchise Award

January 22, 2007

At the Irish Franchise Association Awards’ ceremony just before Christmas, Home Instead Senior Care was honoured as the Best Emerging Franchise. In the opinion of the judges, Home Instead has built a business model that provides a significant opportunity for people to build enterprises throughout Ireland. The pilot operation in Leopardstown in Dublin has enjoyed the most successful first year in business of over 700 Home Instead operations worldwide.

At the Irish Franchise Association Awards’ night just before Christmas, Home Instead Senior Care received the Best Emerging Franchise award.

The award was presented to Ed Murphy and Michael Kearney, founders of Home Instead in Ireland, by Frank Ryan, CEO Enterprise Ireland.

Home Instead Senior Care provides services to the elderly to enable them to live in their own homes for longer than would be otherwise possible. Services include personal care such as assistance with walking, dressing, meal preparation and medication reminders, and home care such as light housekeeping and laundry, as well as accompanying elderly clients to medical appointments and shopping. People with early dementia or Alzheimer’s can also be assisted and convalescent care is available for those who have recently been in hospital.
Leopardstown office is the world’s number one

Having had the most successful first year ever recorded by a Home Instead office worldwide, the pilot office in Leopardstown in Dublin is currently looking after over 150 people.

The company has received a huge number of enquiries from potential franchisees and has held detailed discussions with 10 potential owners at this stage, said Ed Murphy, managing director.

Home Instead Senior Care won the Award because in the opinion of the judges, they have built a business model that provides a significant opportunity for people to set up and grow successful businesses in many communities throughout Ireland. Among they key factors that won Home Instead this prestigious award were:

* The pilot operation in Leopardstown has enjoyed the most successful first year in business of over 700 Home Instead operations worldwide.
* There are six offices operating less than 18 months after launch.
* Ed Murphy and Michael Kearney have a track record in franchising and a proven ability to execute the business plan within a relatively short time-frame.
* Business worth over €2.5 million has been created in 16 months.
* Home Instead has provided employment for over 250 people, many of whom would not have returned to the workforce without the encouragement of Home Instead. This figure is expected to increase to over 2,000 in the next five years.
* Home Instead is already providing care for over 280 people, helping them enjoy a quality of life that otherwise they may not have had. This figure is expected to increase to over 2,000 in the next five years.

Why the service has been successful

Elderly persons often end up having to leave their homes because they have no one there to help them with basic tasks such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation and personal care. The company directly employs care givers, whose references are checked thoroughly with the relevant agencies, including the Gardai. Care givers go through a training programme and are supervised by a healthcare professional who liaises with the person’s doctor and monitors their general health. Central to the success of the service is the relationship between the care giver and the senior person. The company is also sensitive to the personal aspects of the relationship with the person being cared for. This is a long term commitment and if clients are not completely content, Home Instead will substitute the care giver.

While at present 12% of the population is 65 and older, that is due to grow progressively up to 20% by the year 2030. This growth is happening at a time when traditional family care givers are been swallowed up in the Irish workforce. With 27% of our elderly living alone and the hospitals bursting at the seams, it is easy to see why there is a fantastic opening for Home Instead Senior Care.
