Elsie Enjoys Her Visit to Wimbledon Aged 88!

Veteran tennis fan Elsie Brown – who thought she would never revisit Wimbledon after she was widowed and then broke her hip – has returned in style to the South London tournament and enjoyed one of the best days of her long life.

Bluebird Care customer Elsie, 88 – who contributed to the war effort by operating a huge crane lifting aeroplane engines for Sir Frank Whittle  – saw her dream come true, thanks to complimentary tickets from Wimbledon.

On a beautiful summer’s day, complete with a hat, Elsie made a triumphant return on Friday (June 25)– enjoying the spectacular skills of Andy Roddick and Venus Williams on Number One court.

Elsie had visited many times in her younger days and her anecdotes struck a chord with Joy Grant, owner of Bluebird Care’s office in Rugby and South Leicestershire, who wrote to Wimbledon in a successful bid to secure some complimentary tickets – not available on the open market.

At the request of Elsie’s daughter Amanda, Joy accompanied wheelchair-bound Elsie, from Lutterworth, Leicestershire, to Number One court, armed with a special picnic.

Joy, who has run her care-at-home business in Market Street, Lutterworth, since 2008, said, “What a fabulous time Elsie had – she didn’t stop talking all the way there, telling me stories of past matches and players. When we picked her up bright and early, she was dressed up, with her hat, and was all ready to go. We had great seats and the stewards looked after us very well. There was no way Elsie was leaving before the end and we saw three good matches. I suggested she had a sleep on the way back, but she was still too excited. Like Cinderella we got her home at Midnight.”

Elsie said “I never thought I would ever go to Wimbledon again after my husband, Bill died.  Bluebird Care gave me back my life and confidence after breaking my hip and I have had such a lovely day. I am so grateful to everyone who made it happen.”
