People think of the PA role as more of a back office, internal role, and to an extent it is. But with job descriptions becoming ever broader, it’s not unusual to hear of PAs acting in a more business-development capacity.

This doesn’t just mean taking responsibility for the little tasks to allow their boss more time for networking and building professional relationships, it also includes important business development tools like research.

By carrying out preliminary research on a prospective client or supplier before their boss meets or engages with them, can result in a bit of background knowledge which might just make the difference in closing that deal.

For example, by looking into a company and its financial performance over the last few years a PA can provide valuable information on which to individually tailor a presentation or pitch for best effect.

Another way a PA can aid business development is through social media. A good PA is a natural proof reader, with high attention to detail, and ideally suited to creating, posting and maintaining regular online updates on your business, as well as sending polite and informative responses to help develop your company’s reputation.
