Why Choose Us?
Support and training
Join us as a franchisee and you'll benefit from a first class training programme to help you take advantage of our proven system. You'll get ongoing support and advice to help progress you and your business throughout your twenty year term.
Get out what you put in
Although your work will be rewarding both financially and personally, don't think of a McDonald's franchise as a licence to print money. The rewards are certainly there, but they're for the earning, not the taking. And if you're looking for an investment where you can sit back and not be involved, this isn't for you. We're not trying to put you off - we just want you to be aware of some of the realities before you go further.
We're full members of the British Franchise Association
The British Franchise Association (BFA) is the voluntary self regulating governing body for franchising.

What We Look For?
Your skills
Like we said, a career as a McDonald's franchisee is not by any means for everyone. Equally, we don't accept just anyone either. Ideally, you'll already have a successful business or career and will have demonstrated significant team leadership.
It should come as no surprise then, that our selection process is rigorous. We look for individuals with:
- High personal integrity
- High standards of people management and communication
- Ability to display financial acumen
- Strong leadership qualities
- The personality to be an excellent ambassador for McDonald's
Hands-on management
Running a McDonald's franchise means running it. The role would vary from working in the restaurant and preparing the food to dealing with marketing critical business decisions. It is emphatically hands-on. You will be leading your team and ensuring that at all times, the customers visiting your restaurant enjoy the highest standards on each and every visit.
Active in the community
And it doesn't end there. We encourage all of our franchisees to be active in the community. Usually, they support community programmes like local junior football teams or issues relating to the environment. So you can see, it's as much about earning respect within and outside your restaurant as it is about earning money.
The Process
The approval process
After several interviews, if we're both sure that a McDonald's franchise is right for you, you'll embark on your training programme which typically takes nine months. This involves visiting and working in several restaurants as well as classroom-based tuition. The training is excellent, but you'll have to support yourself throughout that period, as well as provide a refundable £5,000 training deposit.
There's more to running a McDonald's franchise than serving burgers and french fries - much more. You'll need a remarkable aptitude for connecting and communicating with people. You'll be completely committed for at least 20 years, with no other business interests. And we only offer franchises to individuals although many of our franchisees run their businesses as husband-and-wife teams.
FAQs
Your questions answered
What do I get for my money?
You purchase the equipment and the rights to operate a business from a location for a set term; you therefore in effect buy the profitability of a business. The challenge is to maximise the sales and profitability of the business over the 20 year term.
Can I have more than one store?
We only franchise one restaurant at a time. If you attain consistently high standards then McDonald's will consider selling you additional restaurants.
Can I set up the franchise in my own property?
Property selection and franchisee selection are two wholly separate decisions. As we sell existing trading restaurants, the sourcing of a site is not necessary. Our franchisee selection process is based on an individual’s career or business track record. We only sell existing restaurants with at least 2 years trading history to new franchisees.
Will I have to work in the business full time or can I have a manager to look after my store?
Buying into McDonald's is a hands-on investment and you are required to fully participate in the day to day running of the business. However as you expand with additional restaurants obviously you will require management assistance.
Will I be able to sell my business in the future?
Yes, if your personal circumstances change then you may sell the remainder of your term to a McDonald's approved buyer (someone who has been approved through the McDonald's franchisee selection process).
I have a property that I would like to franchise myself, how do I go about this?
Franchising and Property are two separate areas of McDonald's. We only franchise existing company owned restaurants to new franchisees. If you own a property/site that meets all of the criteria detailed on development then please contact the relevant member of the Property Team for your area. Please note that if your site is of interest to McDonald's you would not be able to franchise it yourself as it would open as a company owned restaurant.
